SEASON ENDING TOURNAMENT  REVIEW   –   CHATHAM TO WOODS HOLE!

Firing what might be the round of the year, a -4 under par 67, our friend Todd Cook, PGA HP at the Milton-Hoosic Club (far right) is joined by his team comprised of (l to r) Mike Nemetz, Peter Ladow and Paul D’attanasio who finished T-3 in the team 2 BB of 4 format.  Cook’s stellar 3 birdies- 1 eagle  & 1  bogey round easily outdistanced the field of 22 pros and their teams who all walked the hallowed grounds of Eastward Ho! for the Chapters’ Fall Finale Pro-Am.  Runner-Up pro, Frank Dully PGA HP at Kernwood GC shot an even-par 71 on a very windy day alongside Pleasant Bay in Chatham. Leading the Cape Cod contingent of low pro scoring were The Bay Club’s PGA Assistant Ben Egan and The Back Nine GC’s PGA HP Bob Giusti who both fired 73’s.

The 2017 Cape Chapters’ tournament schedule began and ended at Eastward Ho! – both events sold out weeks prior to being played.  In all, over 60 Cape pros teed it up on at least one Chapter event.  From time to time the Chapter features a  low Amateur competition – which, at Eastward Ho!  was won by Matt Parziale, a Thorny Lea GC member and recent winner of the USGA Mid-Amateur Championship exempting  him into next Springs’ Masters and next summers’ US Open!  Matt overcame two triple bogeys enroute to his winning 74 as he eagled the par-5 17th hole to edge Sandwich Hollows’ Dave Pagnini’s 75 by one shot!

Matt Baran, PGA Oyster Harbors (left) met Scott Trethewey, PGA Bay Pointe in the suspended finals of the 2017 CCPGA MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP contested on the scenic Woods Hole GC links, sponsored by Callaway Golf & Peter Guild.

Trethewey had beaten Tom Rooney, PGA LeBaron Hills and Bob Giusti, PGA The Back Nine Club to reach the finals while Baran vanquished 6X Match Play Champ Greg Yeomans, PGA The Bay Club and Tom Tobey, PGA Sandwich Hollows who had recently won his third Chapter Championship two weeks earlier.

The Match Play was hosted by our Chapters’ District Director Glenn Kelly who welcomed one of the best fields for this championship in years.

Trethewey grabbed an early 2-up lead after Baran (who was very sick with flu-like symptoms) bogeyed Holes 2 & 3.  He retained at least a 2-up lead throughout the match eventually closing Baran out on the picturesque 17th green – officially winning 3 & 1.  The Finals were highlighted by Trethewey’s steady play – making no bogeys, with his best par-save (for a half)   from well off the green on the difficult par-3 13th.  Baran made an impressive  play on the short 14th almost holing out his flip wedge after nearly driving the green for a win but his equally  aggressive approach shot on the very next hole ended up inches behind the green in the heavy stuff leading to hole-losing bogey - making Trethewey dormie 3.

Matt Baran had another solid year representing The Oyster Harbors Club in NEPGA, NEAA and CCPGA competitions – finishing 2nd in the New England Assistants Championship – having won this title last year as well.  Baran is 4X Chapter Champion in the last six years.

RALLYING 69 LEADS TO TOMMY TOBEY’S  THIRD CHAPTER CHAMPIONSHIP

September 28, 2017
OCEAN EDGE RESORT
BREWSTER,  MASSACHUSETTS

Tom Tobey & Zach Tucker
Sandwich Hollows' PGA HP Tommy Tobey (picutured left) rallied from a six shot deficit to win the 2017 Cape Cod Chapter Championship firing 75-69  144, edging Cape Cod National's PGA Apprentice Zach Tucker (69-79  148) and The Bay Club's PGA GM Greg Yeomans (73-75  148) and Oyster Harbors Clubs' PGA HP Sean Edmonds (pictured right) who returned 74-75  149 to finish solo 4th place.  Most impressive part of Tobey’s rally?  15 Pars and 3 Birdies in extremely difficult conditions! Then next best score in the tough afternoon winds?  54-yr old John Paesani, PGA HP at The Bay Club who was recently inducted into the Connecticut PGA Hall-of-Fame!

ROUND 1 -
Zachary Tucker, 26 year  old  Assistant Pro at Cape Cod National  shot a first round 3-under par 69 in the Callaway Cape Cod PGA Chapter Championship held at the beautiful Ocean Edge Resort.   Tucker,  recent winner of the 2017  England Assistant Association Match Play Championship parlayed five birdies against two bogies  to take a four shot lead after round one over 2x Chapter Championship winner Greg Yeomans, PGA General Manager at The Bay club. In all, 20 local chapter golf professionals teed it up in the 36-hole affair. Oyster Harbors PGA lead assistant Matt Baran was defending champion and fired  78 in round one. Meanwhile his mentor and Oyster Harbors Head Professional Sean Edmonds was tied for third after shooting a fine two over par 74 in the morning tying fellow competitor in his 3-some -  Bay Pointe PGA HP Scott Trethewey.  Lurking at +3 over par 75 was 2X winner Tommy Tobey.

Ocena Edge #9
Morning conditions at Ocean Edge

Conditions were completely different between the morning and afternoon rounds. Round 1 began in a thick fog and rainy conditions  while Round 2 cleared into bright sunny skies and  fierce winds which also  beset the President’s Cup down the coast in NYC.   Coupled with challenging hole positions the champion prevailed through it all to win.  Tobey had won this championship in 2005 (at The Captains firing 68-69) and 2008 (at LeBaron Hills – 143).  The Salem State graduate turns 50 next month!

Huge thanks to our PGA Host – Brandon Roseth and his sensational staff.  More thanks to our sponsors – CALLAWAY GOLF/ Peter Guild, PGA TOUR, AVIDIA BANK and TOURNAMENT SOLUTIONS.
